William Orville Douglas (October 16, 1898 – January 19, 1980)

As a youth, he fell ill with polio, but he escaped permanent paralysis, and a self-imposed program of exercise
left him with a lifelong love of the outdoors.

final running mate which would have made him President of the United States instead of Harry Truman.

well as history, politics, and foreign relations.

United States Supreme Court Associate Justice. With a term lasting thirty-six years and seven months,
he remains the longest-serving justice in the history of the Court.
