CONSERVATIVE
MELTDOWN MAKES LIBERALS LOOK GOOD
Regarding Steve
Hayes' March 23 letter [to the Lexington Herald-Leader], "Academia's
Liberal Tilt," I would like to
express my exasperation with Conservatives' tired tirade against
Liberalism, as if it were a Disease to be excised from
the Body Politic.
We
Liberals are proud of our positions promoting the Common Good and
Individual Rights, and disdain the Selfish,
Moral-Policing, 'Me-First' views of those who control the Conservative
Leadership.
It is not Liberalism that has been the cause of the recent spate
of Conservative electoral victories. Rather, it's the
Right Wing's well-designed and, indeed, brilliant effort to consolidate
its base and discourage disparate views within the
Republican Party that is responsible for the control of all three
branches of government by those who do not represent the
views of the majority of Americans.
For example, a clear majority of the electorate favors abortion
rights, in polar opposition to a key plank of the
Republican Party platform. In addition, the majority of Americans
believe the war in Iraq has been a colossal mistake
based on false premises, though the GOP leadership continues to
defend it. The Right Wing rules by fear and intimidation.
We have all seen the results of Republican control: an Ill-Conceived
War, Record Deficits and Rampant disregard of the
Constitution that is the basis for all that we hold dear.
Am I a liberal? In this day and age, it is increasingly easy to
answer "Yes". |
