ARCHES
OF THE RED RIVER GORGE Volumes 1, 2, & 3
"Kentucky
ranks third in the United States in the number of natural arches,
behind Utah
and
Arizona. The Red River Gorge area contains the largest concentration
in the state of
these
spectacular rock formations. This DVD is a slide show tour containing
more than 500
slides
of over 50 arches and windows, as well as other interesting rock formations,
wild
flowers
and natural beauty, primarily from the area charted on the Slade and
Pomeroyton
7.5'
topological maps. The intent of this DVD is to provide the visitor
a glimpse of the unique
beauty
and variety of this area as well as to document, with topological
maps and Global
Positioning
System (GPS) coordinates, the actual location of these arches and
routes to them.
This
work, the first of several volumes to be published documenting arches
of the Red River
Gorge
Area, constitutes the most extensive, published documentation of these
arches to date."

1600 climbs, including

THE
SANDSTONE CHRONICLES: ROCK ART OF THE RED RIVER GORGE, AN APPALACHIAN
JOURNEY
by Alan K. Cornette,
1st Printing (2005)
The broad spectrum
of the Sandstone Chronicles is to embellish the description of the
prehistory of
the American continent.
The Chronicles lend sympathy to the human condition of Native Americans
occupying the southeastern
U.S. during the period between 1550 and 1850. Crafted artifacts
and
artistic elements carved
on rocks in Kentucky's Red River Gorge indicate intimate contact
between
central American and
north American cultures.
This
work is a critique of several aspects of historical events, professional
archeological opinions,
and the failure of our
social community to recognize the tragedy of losing valuable archeological
sites
in the Red River
Gorge. This book examines the outdated belief that Columbus discovered
America,
the undisputable evidence
that Africans were involved in the earliest culture in Central America
(the Olmecs) thousands
of years before Columbus, and the roll China played in producing
maps of
the New World during
the late Ming Dynasty in 1421- 23.
The
Sandstone Chronicles defines the ambiance of the Red River Gorge,
and the Indian rock art
illustrated and
discussed divulges a small but important part of Kentucky history.

THE
UNFORSEEN WILDERNESS: KENTUCKY'S RED RIVER GORGE (March
12, 2006 Edition)
Photographs by Ralph
Eugene Meatyard, Text by Wendell Berry. 3rd Printing (1971 - 1991-
2006)
Focus on the RED
RIVER GORGE while a Dam was Very Much a Possibility.
Only someone who
values land enough to farm a hillside for more than thirty years could
write
about a wild place
so lovingly. Wendell Berry just as easily steps into Kentucky’s
Red River Gorge
and makes the observations
of a poet as he does step away to view his subject with the keen,
unflinching eye of
an essayist. The inimitable voice of Wendell Berry—at once frank
and lovely—is
our guide as we explore
this unique wilderness.
Located in eastern Kentucky and home to 26,000
acres of untamed
river, rock formations, historical sites, unusual vegetation and wildlife,
the Gorge
very nearly fell
victim to a Dam & man-made Lake forty years ago. "No place
is to be learned like a
textbook," Berry
tells us, and so through revealing the Gorge’s corners and crevices,
its ridges and
rapids, his words
not only implore us to know more but to venture there ourselves. Infused
with his
very personal perspective
and enhanced by the startling photographs of Ralph Eugene Meatyard,
The Unforeseen Wilderness
draws the reader in to celebrate an extraordinary natural beauty and
to better understand
what threatens it.
"This
Book Represents Two Visions Among Many that Ultimately Saved the Gorge
From
Destruction. Happily
Not An Epitaph to One Place, It Remains a Relevant Homage to Wild
Places
Everywhere."

THE
KENTUCKIAN (1955) DVD
Starring and Directed
by Film Icon, Golden Globe and Academy Award Winner Burt Lancaster
Features Red River
Gorge's own "Sky Bridge"
"The recently
widowed Lancaster heads towards Texas with his son Donald McDonald.
Most of
the folks
he meets, notably winsome Schoolmarm Diana Lynn, Bondslave Dianne
Foster, and
Lancaster's
Down-to-Earth brother John McIntyre and Sister-in-Law Una Merkel,
are pretty good
souls, despite
the raging Family Feud that motivates the plotline. The same cannot
be said of
Whip-Wielding
Saloonkeeper Walter Matthau (in his film debut), who goads Lancaster
into a
bloody fight.
Matthau wins this round, but he gets his just deserts before the
final fadeout.
Based on
the Novel "The Gabriel Horn" by Felix Holt, The Kentuckian
makes excellent use of
Technicolor
and Cinemascope, as well as the musical expertise of composer Bernard
Herrmann."
