WALLY
vs MOTHER NATURE |
Less
than 2 weeks now separate us from the 34th Annual RRS Trip ...
SEMPER AQUA. It is at this time
behind the scenes we quietly begin to discuss many technical issues
which are intended to make our
journey a successful one. On the side we lend attention to a factor
we have little control over ...
the weather, specifically hurricane watching. Many older RRS Members
will be aware of our ongoing
struggle with the legendary Mother Nature ... don't be fooled
by her beauty for she's also a killer!
This week we represent our yearly clash with Ms Nature by matching
her in a boxing ring with our
very own Wally Whippoorwill! Wally's crafty, he can bob and weave
... Nature hits more with power!
Should Wally prevail in our fictitious Weather Title Match ...
Winner makes the weather during
RRS XXXIV ... we could then relax a bit more during our preparations
for departure and visit
thereafter . Why not, we've tried everything else over the years.
Fight Odds anyone?
On the serious side, we are slowly preparing for our trek. Everything
from Vehicle Maintenance,
Equipment Checks, and Security Issues. This is it folks ... its
once a year. Remember when you left
the site last year? The thoughts of all those Holidays, Sporting
Events, Family Reunions stood in
our way in order to return to this point. Now its here ... make
ready ... make it so.

YOUR
BRAIN IN RED RIVER GORGE |
For
the Scarecrow, living Outdoors was perhaps more healthy than becoming
the Civilized Ruler of OZ.
"It was a primitive trip with a sophisticated
goal: to understand how heavy use of digital devices
and other technology changes how we think and behave, and how
a retreat into nature might reverse
those effects. Cellphones
do not work here, e-mail is inaccessible and laptops have been
left behind.
It is a trip into the heart of silence"
"Echoing other researchers, understanding how attention works
could help in the treatment of a host
of maladies, like attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia and
depression. On a day-to-day basis,
too much digital stimulation can “take people who would
be functioning O.K. and put them in a range
where they’re not psychologically healthy."
"The quest to understand the impact on the brain of heavy
technology use — at a time when such use is
exploding — is still in its early stages. It is no less
significant than when scientists investigated
the effects of consuming too much meat or alcohol."

KENTUCKY
REPTILE ZOO TAKE 2 |
The series of Koomer
Ridge Campground (KRC) programs sponsored
by the USFS continues this upcoming
weekend with a visit from The Kentucky Reptile Zoo (KRZ).
"Reptiles and Amphibians", Saturday,
August 21, 7:00 pm ET - - Experience reptiles and amphibians up-close
as the Kentucky Reptile Zoo brings
these amazing animals to Koomer Ridge. For anyone who has visited
the KRZ, located at Slade, you will
be aware of the impressive program they can deliver. Other than
the fascinating species which they
house the KRZ greatest strength is in the knowledge they offer,
the ability to differentiate between
"Fact & Myth" regarding these lifeforms. Visit the
Kentucky Reptile Zoo website, videos there also
promote Reptile and Amphibian education for Humans. [CLICK

The Kentucky Reptile Zoo was scheduled in this Koomer Ridge Campground
Series back on June 26 but
something happened to prevent that. Following that weekend RRS
Member Jim Stickley let us know
there had been some unforeseen event which must have happened.
So this upcoming weekend should
be the only KRZ Program at Koomer Ridge this year, its a very
popular one so plan ahead.
On the homefront, we have rounded Third Base and we are now heading
for Home! We are less than
30 days away from this year's BIG TRIP,
RRS: SEMPER
AQUA ... plans are being made, make yours.

BIRTHDAY to RRS Members Ethan

SUNRAYS
OVER THE FOG |
This
Week we received an Exclusive RRG Photo & Message from John
Snell to pass along, from August 6th:
"Since it was going to be in the low
60's last night, I suspected there would be some fog in the Red
River
Valley. I got up at 3 a.m. and drove to the Auxier Ridge trailhead,
and began my hike around 5. It was the
first time since my knee replacement in March that I had attempted
to hike that distance. I was rewarded
with some nice scenery. The Gorge
never disappoints! I've attached a photo from my efforts.
Don't know if I told you, but my Red River Gorge book has not
been in print for a couple of months. I have
basically sold out of what few copies I had on hand. There may
still be a couple of places around that
have a copy or two, but it's not going to be reprinted. Not my
decision, however, but one made by the
publisher. Will there be a "Volume 2" of the book? I
have to get through another knee replacement in
September and rehab it before I'll take on another book project.
I'll certainly let y'all know if
something's upcoming.
Lastly, I just returned from a great trip to southwestern Colorado,
where I photographed wildflowers,
waterfalls and other scenery in the La Plata Canyon outside of
Durango. Images can be seen at

KENTUCKY AFIELD'S
RRG TROUT PACKING |
|
August
2nd - 8th, 2010 |
RED
RIVER GORGE TROUT STOCKING VIDEO |
Every
year, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources stocks
725,000 trout in the state’s
streams, rivers and lakes. Have you ever wondered how nearly three-quarters
of a million trout get
from the hatchery to your favorite fishing hole?
The Fish Transportation Section stocks most of the brown and rainbow
trout in the state, part of the
4.5 million fish that Kentucky Fish and Wildlife stocks each year.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
also helps stock trout in the streams within the Daniel Boone
National Forest, including the rugged
Red River Gorge.
Sometimes, however, it takes assistance from volunteers to help
trout on the final leg of their
journey. The most difficult part of stocking can be getting trout
from a transportation truck to a
remote stream. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife employees may hike miles
of hills, climb over logs & finally
slide into streams just to get fish to the water. Quickly getting
trout to the water takes work and is
vital to the health of the fish, so each spring and fall, as the
fish hauling trucks load up, fisheries
employees round up volunteers to help with the wilderness trout
stockings.
