DAYLIGHT
SAVINGS TIME ENDS |
A
gentle reminder – the time change is coming up. Don’t
worry, though. This one is the cool time change
that gives you an extra hour of sleep, unlike its evil, Sleep-Sucking
Stepsister in Spring. This weekend,
at 2:00am on November 6th, Daylight Savings Time will end, and
revert back to Daylight Standard Time.
You’ll need to wind back the clock one hour, going back
in time (incredible!) to 1:00am, at least for
all of your old-fashioned gadgetry that won’t do it automatically.
If you live in Arizona or Hawaii, just
ignore this. No word on whether or not the penguins in Antarctica
bother either.
Although not punctual in the modern sense, ancient civilizations
adjusted daily schedules to the Sun
more flexibly than modern DST does, often dividing daylight into
twelve hours regardless of day length,
so that each daylight hour was longer during summer. For example,
Roman Water Clocks had different
scales for different months of the year. On April 30th, 1916,
Germany and its World War I allies were
the first to use DST as a way to conserve coal during wartime.
Britain, most of its allies, and many
European neutrals soon followed suit. Russia and a few other countries
waited until the next year
and the United States adopted it in 1918. [CLICK

FIRE: Kentucky residents may build
outdoor fires between 6:00pm and 6:00am until Mid-December.

WETLAND
RESTORATION AND CONSTRUCTION GUIDE |
In 2011 the Wetland Trust partnered with author Tom Biebighauser,
the Upper Susquehanna Coalition, the
Center for Wetlands and Stream Restoration, and Partners in Amphibian
and Reptile Conservation (PARC)
to publish Wetland Restoration and Construction: a Technical Guide.
A description and preview of the book:
The author reveals practices used to restore over 1,400 wetlands
in 18 states and two Canadian provinces,
answering questions asked by the thousands of professionals and
landowners who have taken the hands-on
wetland restoration workshops he instructs across North America.
Clear, logical step-by-step instructions explain how to design
and establish naturally-appearing and
functioning wetlands for wildlife and fish habitat, cleaning run
off, recharging groundwater, and preventing
flooding. Over 650 detailed color drawings and photographs illustrate
highly effective and inexpensive techniques
for restoring wetlands. Whether your aim is to help wildlife or
to carry out a successful mitigation project
this book will expertly guide you through the steps required to
build a wetland. [CLICK

HAPPY
THANKSGIVING & PREPPING FOR OUR HOLIDAY BREAK |
Strange
for a top 5 year for rainfall (since records have been kept),
we somehow managed to pull off every
RRS event planned. Beating the odds normally is not our strong
suit but things change I suppose, we just
got lucky. Imagine, for example, the only week in September that
did not rain was the week we held our
annual trip! From our Mad Mountain Mike Hike to the Great Pumpkin
Caper its been a wild ride.
This is Thanksgiving Week - a time for Family, Friends, Food and
Football so we will focus on that and try
to relax. Just in case we have any 'Breaking News' you can be
sure it will show up first on RRGtoday.com,
a site that consistently brings RRG stories to you before anyone
else. Not a brag, just a fact. Plus, as time
passes the site is updated with news links, video and photos whenever
available. So when you revisit a
story link often you will find it updated with more information.
Also, we are excited due to our annual 'Holiday Website Break'
beginning November 28th, 2011 and will run
until February 6th, 2012. We will only update our homepage photo
each week during this time featuring the
Christmas Season of course. Look for our annual book and video
links to "A Christmas Carol", "Charlie Brown",
"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and (ultimately) NORAD
Tracks Santa!! Slow down, take some time and view
some of this when you can. We'll be decorating the site next Week!
Soak in the Season.
A Very Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone from the RRS and RRGtoday.
