October 3rd - 9th, 2011
GREAT PUMPKIN CAPER IS ON, PLUS THE MMM VIDEO CHALLENGE
Looking toward next weekend and our Final 2011 RRS Event, THE GREAT PUMPKIN CAPER, we marvel
at outstanding current weather forecast. Expected Daytime Highs in the Mid-70s, Nighttime Lows in the
Mid-50s ... Classic Fall Conditions. With the expected trip completion this upcoming weekend, we
will have cleared our slate of all scheduled RRS Events. This is unusual as nearly every year sees
some sort of cancellation due to bad weather, 2011 will be unique in this regard.
As for THE GREAT PUMPKIN CAPER, it does have a Halloween Theme so run with that if you so choose.
Those planning on attending should expect an email later this week spelling out details, direction
maps, etc.
While we are in the Gorge the Gladie Center is hosting the Wildland Firefighter Exhibition on
Saturday, October 8th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. This could be very interesting and is also the final
scheduled event on the Gladie Center's 2011 Calendar.
Finally this week we invite you to take The Mad Mountain Mike Video Challenge. OK, now we don't
plan on picking on anyone ... but we are going to. In a random selection of Online Red River Gorge
Videos, we have chosen a recent entry for you to view. In this video you will find a couple of
well-meaning fellas but what we are looking from you is this ... "How many USFS Violations can you
find within their 14 minute video posting?" Across the many RRG Videos found on the Web this
feature is not alone but we're starting somewhere. View the video [CLICK HERE] Rules [CLICK]
See what you can discover and email us [CLICK HERE] Brief Results will be posted later on.

JESSICA SANTANGELO RRG VIDEO & 5 YEAR USFS SURVEY
NOTE: Server Issues will extend this edition through October 23rd.
THE GREAT PUMPKIN CAPER has reached its conclusion and thus an end also to our 2011 RRS Events
Calendar. It was a good time surrounded by some of the best weather of the entire year and those
early Fall Colors didn't hurt. Next week we hope to have photos of TGPC posted for all to see.

Over the past weekend we journeyed to the Gladie Center to take in the Wildland Firefighter
Exhibition on Saturday the 8th. Unfortunately, once we arrived, the Center Director, Jessica
Santangelo, informed us that the event had to be cancelled due to a perfect storm of various
situations. Ah well, our conversation also revealed something we had missed early in the year, a
WTVQ-Channel 36 "Kentucky's Backroads" episode called "Majestic Winter" by Greg Stotelmyer
and featuring our own Jessica Santangelo. So better late than never I suppose!

Every 5 years the USFS conducts an area survey of its visitors in order to gauge their
satisfaction level with the Red River Gorge. Several RRS Members took the time to respond
to a brief 4 minute questionnaire in order to help out. The Survey took place over the past
weekend and in our case was held at the entrance to Tunnel Ridge Road. We answered
questions while staying seated in our vehicles, this week's News Feature Photos shows
USFS's Laura Ward administering the survey, view the pic [CLICK HERE]

HAPPY HALLOWEEN
HAVE A SAFE & FUN WEEK
October 24th - 31st, 2011
HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Happy Halloween

For Red River Gorge the annual Trick-or-Treat event doesn't really have an impact on the area unless
Wally Whippoorwill and Gilbert Gotcha go "tree trunk to tree trunk" asking for snacks without our
knowing. What's the chances of that happening? Hum, don't ask.

Hope each of you got your letters in to the 'Great Pumpkin' in time before his visit on Halloween night!
When it comes to Halloween ... I'm a "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" kinda person. The shear fun
of mystery, adventure, costumes and FREE CANDY! leave a huge impression on the young mind. I would like
to think for the better due to the experience, others disagree but that's an issue for another time.
The History of Halloween is broad and goes back a few steps -- for that [CLICK HERE].
To everyone a Very Happy and Safe Halloween from the RRS.
