ONE WEEK LEFT, TIME TO PANIC
After months of having 'plenty of time' to take care of 'certain things' getting ready for the BIG
Annual trip or arranging for the care of some issue while you are gone ... well, time is up. As
is customary, this week is set aside as 'Panic Week' were, in a mad dash, a month's worth of
preparation is squeezed into 6 or 7 days. I prefer the arms-waving-over-your-head, run
screaming-down-the-street kind of panic but that's me ... the optimistic type. Remember, its
never too late to start getting ready and you are not alone in your endeavors. Hang in there.

Have some good-sad news from the Gladie Center, Center Director Jessica Santangelo has accepted
a new position at Eastern Kentucky University and will be leaving us January 2012. She's been a
wonderful person to work with during our RRS ramblings and she will be missed. She's let us know:
"Thank you a lot for taking such great care of the gorge! I'm usually in on Tues/Thurs/Sat each
week if you all want to stop in and say hi. This may be the last time I get to see you all as I
accepted a full-time lecturer position at EKU that begins in January so I'll be leaving the Forest
Service. I'm going to miss Gladie and the gorge, but the offer from EKU was too good to turn down."
"You all are set to debut in the November/December/January Newsletter - you made the front page!
If you take any good pictures during your camping trip, feel free to send them along and I'll try
to include them."
- Jessica (Best News: Jessica had a Baby in June! The RRS sends Congrats!)
We wish Jessica and her expanded family all the best, we will miss her. [CLICK HERE]

OF OUR FINAL 2011 RRS EVENT
September 26th - October 2nd, 2011
WILDLAND FIREFIGHTER EXHIBITION
Saturday, October 8, 2011 Wildland Firefighter Exhibition at the Gladie Center from 10am to 3pm.
Learn all about Wildland Fires with Forest Service Firefighters. Meet Smokey Bear, try on fire-
fighter gear and check out the fire engine. Learn all about fire, how to use fire safely and what you
can do to prevent wildland fires. Note: This is the final scheduled 2011 event at the Gladie Center.

The #1 cause of wildfires in the Gorge is escaped campfires. As Fall approaches, help protect the
Gorge from wildfires. It’s very important to use safe campfire practices during Kentucky’s Fall
Fire Season. The Gorge dries and leaves drop, providing plenty of dry fuel for wildfires.
Fire Tips & Data - - -
*If there is a Fire Ban in place, respect it! Illegal campfires put lives at risk.
*Report illegal or unattended campfires (even if they are “just” smoldering).
Call the Gladie Center (606) 663-8100. After 5:30pm call USFS Dispatch: (859)745-3171
*To report a wildfire, call the Gladie Center (after 5:30pm call 911).
*Minimize campfire impacts using methods from the Red River Gorge Bigfoot Challenge [CLICK]
*Never leave a fire unattended, even for a moment.
*Drown your fire, stir it, drown it again. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.
*Use only small pieces of wood (smaller than the thickness of your wrist) and burn them completely
to ash. Large pieces of wood can smolder for days and cause wildfires long after you head home.
