ANNUAL TRIP EVENTS |
With each Annual Trip to the Red River Gorge, surrounding events
always seems to harbor rich times to
remember. This upcoming 35th Annual Venture is no different than
others. At the very beginning of
THE LIGHTHOUSE
KEEPER we will of course be taking note to the infamous September
11th date,
known now as PATRIOT
DAY. I'm sure each of you share similar feelings about this
time in our history.
As in the past few years, we seem to be joined with the POWELL
COUNTY FAIR schedule as they will be
open from Saturday, September 10th thru Saturday 17th. We hope
to receive a day-by-day event planner
from the Fair Curator soon and that time we will post it for all
to see in the RRGToday.com
Forum.
FULL
MOON September 12, the Moon will be directly opposite the
Earth from the Sun and will be fully
illuminated as seen from Earth. This Full Moon was known by early
Native American tribes as the
Full Corn Moon because the corn is harvested around this time
of year, also known as the Harvest Moon.
Finally on Saturday the 17th at 7:00pm ET the University of Louisville
visits the University of
Kentucky at Commonwealth Stadium for their Annual FOOTBALL
CLASH. Many will remember one of
our more exciting Saturday nights a few years ago when UK defeated
UL on a last minute touchdown.
It may only be sports radio but that time was priceless and is
often spoken of. Could it happen again?

RED
RIVER GORGE WATERSHED PROTECTION PLAN |
The
Red River Gorge is a unique and scenic natural area within the
boundaries of the Daniel Boone
National Forest in eastern Kentucky. The Red River is a National
Wild and Scenic River and an
Outstanding National Resource Water. These designations guide
the management and protection of
watersheds, wildlife, archaeological resources, and spectacular
geologic features in the gorge.
Kentucky Waterways Alliance & the USFS work now on the Red
River Gorge Watershed Protection Plan
and Implementation Project. This EPA 319 Nonpoint Source grant
addresses the upper watershed areas
that are mostly private land. Streams in these headwater areas
are mostly in good condition but are
threatened by illegal dumps, loss of streamside vegetation, runoff
from towns, agriculture, and
mines. Pathogens in several tributaries threaten public health
and drain into the Red River.
Historically, efforts to improve and protect water quality have
been implemented on a piece-meal
basis and did not examine entire watersheds. This grant is developing
a watershed based plan that
addresses stream threats and impairments on private and Forest
Service lands. The plan will include
additional monitoring and could treat known impacts from heavy
recreation use.

RRS ROUND TABLE |

August

RRS
ROUND TABLE |
RRS:
THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER represents a deep, rich history which is
multi-layered over the
passage of time. For those long since gone from our ranks, we
look back to appreciate their
contributions which have brought us to this point. Also, to the
continued efforts of those still
working to help make this annual occurrence a reality, we say
"Thank You". No one single person or
small group of people could have sustained the longevity of this
organization, it's taken a Village!
Each year there exist traditional challenges in preparing for
our departure such as provisions,
equipment status/repair, and attention to those Special Projects
often undertaken. 2011 will see
a few unique events/offers in celebration of our upcoming milestone.
We want to acknowledge
the people who have volunteered to take on the time, effort and
cost necessary to complete these
tasks. Each seem to do so for the greater good of the group. None
that I know of expect praise
... just the promised look of enjoyment from those in attendance.
"How Noble in Virtue ... for those
who promote 'Bliss' among his fellow Man."
We've always used the analogy of King
Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table during our many
years. Attempting to project equality among our ranks, the Round
Table can function just as well
acting as the Round Campfire Ring. It worked for Arthur and his
people but only during a small
prosperous period and so it too will be true for us . . . for
nothing lasts forever.

MENIFEE
- POWELL COUNTY IRON BRIDGE IN DRYDOCK |
Man-made
Landmarks within the Red River Gorge are not that numerous but
the few that are do stand
out. The Menifee - Powell County Iron Bridge over the Red River
offers safe passage and a nice
platform for viewing nearby Raven Rock. It stands as one of those
memorable navigating points while
we travel within the Gorge or ask others to meet us close by.
Those traveling either way through
Nada Tunnel cannot forget that big metal bridge even if the meeting
be only a few brief seconds.
Now in an effort to fight back against the elements and the passage
to time, the Iron Bridge is
being refurbished. If she were a ship at sea we would call her
being in 'Drydock'. Covered from
end-to-end and in a vacuumed environment; this famous landmark
is being cleaned and prepared for a
new look. Presumably a new paint-job is upcoming for the ole girl
and it will be great to see how
she will appear. The workers on site (they were working on a Sunday
and still after 4:30pm) spoke
with us (very friendly) and let us know that the entire project
should take between 2 to 3 weeks
as of today. This timeframe will intersect with our upcoming 35th
Annual RRG Trip and should
prevent no issues ... the installed automatic Solar-powered, Stop-Light
System moves traffic
very efficiently. See more of this ongoing project [CLICK
HERE] RRGToday.com Thread [CLICK]
**NOTE: Our primary purpose in the
Gorge this day was to review Indian Glen for issues we might
deal with during our annual trip, we did discover some. A Recon
Report will be emailed this week.
