THE
END OF AN ERA |
A Red River Gorge visit is never complete until, at some point,
we turn our eyes to the heavens
to contemplate great mysteries and our place within them. For
decades NASA's Space Shuttle Fleet
has orbited above us during many of our RRG ventures, that will
now come to an end and it is
worth noting. After 30 years of service, NASA's fleet of three
space shuttles is standing down for good.
The final shuttle mission planned, the STS-135 launch of Atlantis,
is scheduled for July 8. After that,
the orbiters will be headed to museums to live out their lives
on public display.
The shuttle takes off from Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island,
north-northwest of Cape Canaveral.
That's on the east coast of Florida, just to the east of Orlando.
Atlantis is scheduled to lift off at 11:26am ET on Friday, July
8th, but the time and date are always
subject to change. As NASA likes to remind us, "Launching
humans into space is a very complex business,"
and many different factors can cause a delay or postponement.
It's a chance to see history. NASA is retiring its space shuttle
program, to be replaced with a new space
exploration program focused on sending astronauts to deep space
and asteroids. STS-135 is the final space
shuttle mission. [To See Atlantis in a previous Launch CLICK

In other news, the Red River Gorge has been on Television the
previous week for all the wrong reasons.
First word comes down of another Black Bear encounter ... a 'marauding'
Bear as the report called him.
The Bear had supposedly raided a campsite while the occupants
were out exploring. As it turned out
the campsite had been abandoned for some time, still had food
left behind and the Bear was simply
foraging. There's a difference between that and 'marauding'. Read
for yourself [CLICK

Second story was of yet another fall victim from the Chimney Top
Rock area. The 34 year old man dropped
nearly 50 feet around 10:00pm last Friday but is expected to be
alright. Updated Story [CLICK

RRS
CANADA BEGINS |
The
time has come, this Friday officially begins the long-awaited
RRS CANADA
Adventure for several of
our members. After over a year of preparation, discussion and
planning down to the most minute detail,
its time to find out if everything works out! Being Air-lifted
into an isolated 18 mile Lake with a
lone cabin for a week, completely cut-off from civilization, with
a mission to extract as many fish
from said lake as possible . . . sounds great. Unfortunately we
must await the party's return before
we may share their stories so stay tuned.
Last week we had a pleasant surprise when the Lexington Herald-Leader
Newspaper ran a story on
"Activities in Kentucky". The short section on the Red
River Gorge referenced our own Jim Stickley's
website RRGtoday.com as the reference source for all its readers
to check out before visiting the
area. Well we could not be prouder of Jim and our association
with him in being recognized over
several other worthy RRG sites. Check out the story over at RRGtoday.com

Following up on our story on the Final Flight of Shuttle Atlantis,
we wanted to remind everyone that
the craft is scheduled to land this Thursday, July 21st at 5:56am
EDT at the Kennedy Space Center's
Shuttle Landing Facility. It's the end of an era, its history
and you can watch it LIVE [CLICK

Finally, as we draw closer to our 35th Annual Trip in September
we soon will be featuring more details.
NOTE: Internet Service disruptions
due to Severe Weather will keep us from updating until August
1st.
