DUTCHMAN'S
BREECHES (DICENTRA CUCULLARIA) |
If
you're like the rest of us, you are more than ready for the warmth
of Spring to arrive. We want
to help push that along ... even if it is just visually. Last
Week Lexington Photographer John Snell
contacted us to offer up his latest effort from a journey into
RRG's Indian Creek area. Simply put
it is beautiful and a sign that Spring cannot hold out forever.
Here's the message from Mr. Snell:
"I know you're like most of the rest
of us outdoors people, wondering where/when is Spring! We were
teased with a bit of it seems like a couple of weeks ago, then
plunged back into Winter. Despite
that, I made it over to Indian Creek last Sunday and worked several
clusters of Dutchman's Breeches
to see what I could come up with."
"When I'll get back to shoot some more is anybody's guess.
But it seems that if the cold/cool weather
persists, we'll see a slowly evolving crop of wildflowers that
might stay with us a while.
I'm up for that!" - John Snell, March 30, 2011

RRS
WHITE RABBIT & TORNADOES |
Just
for the record, next weekend's RRS WHITE
RABBIT is shooting more for a 'Alice in Wonderland'
theme than in the Classic Grace Slick number (with Jefferson Airplane).
Yet it is understandable
that the Song does come to mind for some, especially our older
members. What this upcoming weekend
does aim for is to kick off the 2011 RRS Season of Events culminating
with our landmark 35th
Annual Venture this September. WHITE
RABBIT will be the first opportunity for many of us to see
one another since late in 2010. Hopefully the weather will be
kind and we will be watching the
projected forecasts very closely ... we will get the word out
should there be a postponement.
This
past weekend we were concerned to hear that the Gladie Center
had a violent brush with
Mother Nature in the form of a EF-O Tornado. Here is the basic
story:
Two tornadoes from Saturday April 9th have
been confirmed.
Both were EF-0 tornadoes that touched down briefly.
The first touched down just after 2:00 PM near Highway 715 at
Red River Gorge, just west
of the Gladie Center in the Daniel Boone National Forest. This
uprooted hundreds of trees.
Winds were estimated at 80-85 mph, and the path was about 250
yards wide.
(The length is not yet known.) It moved from Menifee to Wolfe
County.

EARTH DAY - FRIDAY
EASTER - SUNDAY |

April
18th - 24th, 2010 |
RRS
DAMBUSTERS |
Many
of us were disappointed with last weekend's postponement of our
2011 Spring Venture, WHITE
RABBIT due to widespread cases of Cabin Fever. It turned out
to be a good call however, in hindsight
yet more rain (1 to 2") and a cold front would have made
for a depressing time. But that is the
way of things during the volatile Spring Season and our trip does
have another chance to work out
being moved two weeks to the weekend of April 29 - May 1st. So
once more unto the breach ...
Unexpectedly this past Sunday, since our trip was postponed &
we were depressed with the weather,
with a Sunny Sunday in the forecast, John and Paul decided to
make the most of it. A few of us
decided to travel down to the RRG for the day, not just to relax
but to see what could be done
with a rather larger Logjam which formed in mid-2010. Last September
we first discovered this
mass along Indian Creek which clearly had shifted the stream-flow
during frequent flood conditions.
In our 35 years of RRG travels never has there been such a rapid
erosion event which directly
affected our journeys. The evidence was clear upon our arrival
last September with downed trees
with their root systems and a loss of the stream's bank. Imagine
our horror to find even more
had disappeared this past Sunday, we estimate a total of 10 feet
of bank has been washed away
since last year. Something had to be done. The following photos
show the first phase of our
operation to either remove elements of the Logjam or create a
situation where logs and trees
might float away during the next heavy rains. To see the Work
Photos [CLICK

NOTE: Friday the 22nd is EARTH
DAY and Sunday the 24th is EASTER
... be safe and enjoy yourselves.

'DON'T BE LATE' - CLICK IMAGE FOR
CLASSIC STAR TREK WHITE RABBIT |
|
April
25th - May 1st, 2010 |
WHITE
RABBIT GETS SECOND CHANCE |
If
you are a resident of the state of Kentucky then you know about
the rain. It has rained and
rained, and rained, and rained with no end in sight really. What
we look for these days are 'breaks'
in the action, opportunities to do things outdoors before the
next downpour. Such was the fate of
our last attempt at pulling off WHITE
RABBIT. The first chance at our Annual Spring Venture fell
into one of those rain-every-other-day periods (lots of it in
fact) and we had to postpone. This
coming weekend is playing much more in our favor, at least the
current projected forecast is and
we are going to run with it.
So get set for April 29th - May 1st for a simple weekend. This
is really the first chance since
last Fall 2010 that many will get to see one another. There are
no planned events during this time
so we may spend a lot of it just talking with another and catching-up
as they say. So if you have
not given this trip serious thought before now, it is not too
late. We are keeping it very simple
yet TOP SECRET,
oh my. Later this week RRS Members will be emailed further instructions
as to
this event's location and other brief details (there are not many).
Also we are looking into a
Chatroom Session this week to get the ball rolling early, so be
thinking of any questions you
might have regarding this upcoming weekend. RRS Members will also
be emailed about time and
date for the chat so be looking for that as well. Think about
it, forecast looks good, go for it.
NOTE: The Gladie Center will be hosting the FREE event
WILDFLOWERS
ON THE BED April 30th and
May 1st ... 10:00am to 3:00pm. Design and quilt your own quilt
pattern as you learn how wildflowers
inspire quilt designs.
