HILLS HAVE BILLS |
Yes
Virginia, there is wonder in the Red River Gorge. During a recent
visit to the RRG, Mad Mountain
Mike and I were checking out the area now emerging from a bitter
winter. While along a tributary of
the river, Mike wanted to try something. He had heard of this
Magical Pool nearby ... could he force
the water to cough up treasure simply by demanding it? Grasping
a rather large stick he then
threatened to beat the water unless it pay! Hey, he knew all the
right things to say. Thus the water
shook and a tribute rose to the surface! We grabbed the cash and
went away.
For all you Doubters, see it all happen for yourself [CLICK

Now I realize how silly this all sounds and I'm sure any educated
individual would be looking for a
good sound, scientific explanation. I have one, a very logical
one ... it is obvious that a small
Gnome or Troll lives under the water and he is sending this money
up cause he enjoys his peace & quiet.
I'm sure that's it because it makes perfect sense to me.
Later we briefly visited FS Road 39, known as Tunnel Ridge Road,
on our way back home. The main gate
at the entrance is open and you may drive to both Pinch em Tight
Parking Lot and Gray's Arch Lot.
However, that is as far as you will go as a new gate has been
erected just beyond the Gray's
parking area [CLICK

done back
in the Fall of 2010. Review text and photos of the area in this

WHITE RABBIT is the name being used
for our Spring Venture Trip, currently it has no date.

SPRING EVENT DESKTOPS |
This
past weekend Mother Nature had a message for us ... "Winter
is not over". Recent warm weather
has many of us ready to cast off the thoughts of anymore ice and
snow in exchange for temperatures
not requiring a jacket. Despite this unpleasant setback nothing
has stopped our people from talking
about our Spring plans for getting outside. To push the issue
further along this week we provide
updated Computer Desktop Wallpaper for MAD
MOUNTAIN MIKE AND THE RED ELIXIR Hike in May
as well as the yet unscheduled WHITE
RABBIT Spring Venture Trip. Just think of them as a little
touch to help warm up your day. To access both sets of Desktops
in various sizes [CLICK

We are always looking for new and inventive camping products each
year just to observe what the
industry is doing to raise the bar. Last week we received a message
from Coleman (ever heard of
them?) and a link featuring their Coleman Instant Tent. This system
is not meant for the backpacker
but is intended for a family outing or group activity as you will
soon see. Take just a few minutes
to look at what they have by watching this video by [CLICKING

Finally, next Monday (March 14th) will see Opening Day at the
Gladie Learning Center. Open 7 Days
per week from 9:00am to 5:30pm. The USFS presence in the RRG officially
marks the beginning of the
2011 Season, at least for us.

REDBUD
SCENIC HIGHWAY |
Prepare
for April, its all about Redbuds in Southern and Eastern Kentucky!
Check out the Everything
Redbud section at this site [CLICK
HERE] for more information on what we do during Redbud Month.
Also go to our facebook page [CLICK
HERE] where updates and redbud announcements are made daily!
The Redbud Trails program is an initiative of Congressman Hal
Rogers (KY 5th Dist). The program was
created in 2004 to encourage and promote tourism in Southern and
Eastern Kentucky. More than
450,000 Redbud trees and seedlings have been planted in TOUR’s
47 county service area and
thousands more will be planted in 2011. Schools, non-profit organizations
and Community Leaders
have all participated in the redbud seedling program.
The site specifically refers to the Red River Gorge and has a
exclusive page set aside:
Red River Gorge, this is "Nature at its Best." The Red
River Gorge is a unique and scenic natural
area within the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. Known
for its abundant natural stone
arches, unusual rock formations, and spectacular sandstone cliffs,
the Red River Gorge has been
designated a geological area by the Forest Service.
The Forest Service manages the Red River Gorge Geological Area
as part of the Daniel Boone
National Forest. The Red River Gorge and surrounding areas have
many designations and are managed
to protect watersheds, wildlife, archaeological resources, the
spectacular geologic features, and
for year-round public use and enjoyment. Great for Outdoor Adventures!

THE
UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY REACHES THE FINAL FOUR |
Whoa
Nelly! Has this website been hijacked!! What's this have to do
with the Red River Gorge? Simply
put its the human element of its visitors ... Decades upon decades
of journeys to Red River have
been accompanied by our interest in countless sporting events
to some degree. However due to the
state of Kentucky's great basketball tradition and it being our
birthright, its very hard for many
of us not to acknowledge the University of Kentucky reaching the
Final Four.
Its been 13 years since a UK team has been in the Final Four,
this year set in Houston, Texas. For
UK Fans that's an eternity so outsiders need to overlook us until
after the championship next week.
Let's be clear about that also, reaching this stage is great but
it isn't the end. We must not be
satisfied. It will take two more games to win the National Championship
and anyone who reaches
this point can knock you off ... so we are not overlooking anyone.
This week is for celebrating, for enjoying the moment, for in
the grand scheme of things we are but
a part of something larger than ourselves ... the Big Blue Nation
and our portion of it that often
resides in the confines of the Red River Gorge, Kentucky.
NOTE: Not to be forgotten, last Friday,
March 25 the Auxier Ridge Area reopened to public use since
the devastating wildfire of late 2010. [CLICK
