BALLAD OF NICOLE PENIX VANZANT

Nicole Marie Penix Vanzant, age 27, was last seen alive on January 19, 2009 in Menifee, Ky. Her mother
drove her to the Dollar General Store, in Frenchburg to meet with her ex-boyfriend. Her mom then went into
the store and when she came back out, Nichole was gone. Josh Brown, her ex-boyfriend, admits to picking
her up at the store, but says he let her out on the side of the road after they got into an argument.

Four months later her body was found in the Red River Gorge around the Indian Creek Road area,
more than forty miles from the Dollar General Store. The death investigation is still unsolved.

A Montgomery County songwriter is hoping that a haunting new folk song that has become a hit on YouTube
could lead to answers in a Menifee County murder that has remained unsolved for two years. Fred Brown
wrote the song, recorded by Sasha Colette, called "Ballad Of Nicole Penix Vanzant," which details
the 2009 murder of the 27-year-old mother whose killer has never been found.

RRG WALKABOUT
Sunday, February 6th a quick tour was made through the Gorge to review its condition after both the
prolonged Fall Forest Fire and near constant Snowfall. I love looking around this time of year, with
the leaves off the trees and the crisp temperatures you can see so many things you cannot during
other seasons. The Waters of the Red River (and other tributaries) are so clear now allowing you to
see to the bottom of it all, really nice. Cloudy Sky at the time [CLICK HERE].
First of all, we entered through the Nada Tunnel and once emerging on the other side you cannot help
but take note of the devastation on the left side of the road due to Forest Fire. The Hillside looks
as though it has been 'skinned'. since the Tunnel Ridge Road area remains closed we could not have
a direct look at the damage but this area around Nada Tunnel will certainly give you a good idea.
Signs still remain up along the roadside on this side of the Nada Tunnel [CLICK HERE].
We also observed the log-jam at Rock & Tildy Branch which is altering the course of the water thus
eroding the land during flooding. Springtime usually presents itself with several of these incidents.
John stands atop the Log-jam [CLICK HERE].
In addition, we took note of the Bear-proof Trash Bin repair. Last year, flooding undercut the base
on which this Trash Bin rested, it is now repaired. In this picture we also packed out someone's
garbage in the form of a plastic drum [CLICK HERE]. Lastly, the Low-water Bridges along 9B both
have their Drains "stopped-up" with debris. These structures soon will be removed from the area, as
we understand it [CLICK HERE].

2011 PROPOSED FOREST PLANNING RULE
On February 10, 2011, the USDA Forest Service unveiled its proposed Forest Planning Rule which would
establish a new national framework to develop land management plans that protect water and wildlife
and promote vibrant communities (press release). The proposed rule is the result of an open,
collaborative rulemaking process that began in December 2009.

“This proposed planning rule seeks to conserve our forests for the benefit of water, wildlife,
recreation and the economic vitality of our rural communities,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
“The proposed rule will provide the tools to the Forest Service to make our forests more resilient to
many threats, including pests, catastrophic fire and climate change. Healthy forests and economically
strong rural communities form a solid foundation as we work to win the future for the next generation.”

Publication of the proposed planning rule in the Federal Register will kick off a 90-day public comment
period, ending May 16. The Forest Service will use comments to develop a final rule. To encourage public
engagement, the Forest Service is hosting an open forum to discuss the proposed rule on March 10, 2011
in Washington, D.C. The meeting will be Web cast to allow for national participation, and there will be
additional public forums held throughout the country. The proposed rule, meeting information, and
additional information can be found by [CLICKING HERE] Read the Proposal in PDF File [CLICK HERE]

TRAILHEAD BOOT BRUSHES

Look Up and Brush Your Boots - This winter, a team of specialists began to rehabilitate the area
burned by the 1,600 acre Fish Trap Fire. The fire started from an escaped campfire that was set
during a fire ban in October 2010. 120 personnel including firefighters, helicopter crews, law
enforcement officers, and support staff helped fight the fire for two weeks.

The area remains closed to the public as the Forest Service begins the restoration process.
Trails/areas affected include: 201 Double Arch Trail, 202 Courthouse Rock Trail,
203 Auxier Branch Trail, 204 Auxier Ridge Trail.

We need your help when this area re-opens. Fire can damage and weaken trees causing them to fall
at any time. Be careful hiking trails—look up for damaged trees or limbs. Always use care when
selecting a backcountry campsite in a burned area.

All visitors to Auxier Ridge, Grays Arch and Pinch-Em Tight trailheads are asked to clean their
shoes at trailhead boot brushes before hiking. The boot brushes, to be installed in 2011, remove
seeds of non-native invasive plants (plants not from this area). Invasive plants grow very well
in burned areas, crowding out native plants (plants from this area). Please help prevent invasive
plants from hitching a ride on your hiking boots. [CLICK HERE]
