DECEMBER
AUTUMN |
Happy New Year, to kick off the Post-Yule Season we present to
you yet another photographer
John W. Snell exclusive. This one taken on December 7, 2008 off
Auxier Ridge along Trail "N"
as referenced in Jerrell
Goodpaster's "Hinterlands" book. This from Mr. Snell-
"For best results, one really needs
to get there while the conifers are still laden with snow, for
often the
breezes soon pick up and rid the trees of their pristine whiteness."
"I was surprised to see there was lingering
color, orange and russet hues of not-yet-fallen oak leaves, still
clinging to the tops of the trees on the ridge
above Nada. The photo shows not only the tree color on the ridgetops
above Nada, but also some traces of snow
from that weekend's small accumulation and evidence of the fire
that ran through the woods above the Nada Tunnel
earlier this autumn." John Snell Exclusives [CLICK

Scheduled
RRS Events for the upcoming 2009 are once again customarily full.
Although we are
expecting some tweaking and additional events the posted dates
on the homepage and
the RRS NEXT
page should be accurate. It is never too early to look over your
personal plans and clear the way.
Keep the coming months in focus by reviewing the First All NEW
2009 Edition of our ever popular

Most are going to relate to this subject. Look it over and see
if you agree.

STEPHEN
COUCH FALL SURVIVOR |
Even
if you aren't a avid follower of events occurring inside the Red
River Gorge you could not have
missed the multiple media reports regarding Stephen Couch's fantastic
survival story. A native of
Louisville Kentucky Mr. Couch's parents are natives of Knott County,
Kentucky. So?? Not much really
expect information that might win you something answering a question
in a game show. Which is, both
RRS Members Greg Stamper and Mike "Mad Mountain Mike"
Hughes where born in Hindman, Knott County,
Kentucky. I promise that is the only tie . . . we have both fallen
before but never from such an
extraordinary height and for entirely different reasons.
All
kidding aside, Stephen Couch is an extremely fortunate individual
to be able to speak today about
the events of that fateful day. In our own RRS
Forum & RRGToday.com
the many angles and points of
view during the Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 Climbing Expedition
to Frog Head Rock have been documented.
Now the final piece of that day lay before us - - Stephen Couch
tells his own story. To read the
Troublesome creek Times Article access it here in our RRS

MARTIN
LUTHER KING, Jr. |
"I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the
difficulties of today and tomorrow,
I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American
dream.
I
have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out
the true meaning of its creed:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are
created equal."
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live
in a nation where they will not be judged
by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today."

THE
ALLURE OF ICE |
All New Exclusive John W. Snell Images from the recent cold extremes!
Mr. Snell describes his adventure - -
"I went to the gorge [Jan 17th] to photograph ice. There
was plenty of it, as the temperatures had dropped
to near zero (4 degrees was my car reading as I passed Clay City
around 8:15 a.m.) for the second consecutive
night. Most of the Red was frozen completely across, the exception
being shallow riffles where the water was
still rushing along. Bell Falls had a cone of ice extending about
a third of the way up from the ground,
unlike when it froze solid all the way up in Feb, 2007. My guess
is that it would take another week of sub-20
degree temps to do that again this year. The "Rock 'n Ice"
photo was taken along the Red perhaps half way
between the concrete bridge and the Gladie Center. The "Frozen
Butterscotch" image was shot along Swift Camp
Creek using a 70-200mm lens and a 1.4x teleconverter. The orange
color is from similarly colored rocks below
the surface. There's beauty in the gorge year-round. All one has
to do is bundle up and go find it!"
Many Thanks to Mr. Snell for braving the elements so we might
